Walking the best exercise medicine for your health

My Ottawa clients often ask me whether there are any exercises I recommend. I am reluctant to prescribe exercises mainly because of non-compliance. Walking is something I do recommend to everybody.

Walking has been found to have significant health benefits, including the reduction of severe attacks associated with lung disease, and a reduced risk of stroke. Walking correctly can only add to such benefits.

Walking with a tucked pelvis promotes poor posture, hinders correct body mechanics, and limits your body’s ability to stretch and strengthen your muscles as you walk.

In addition to cultivating healthy tone in the buttocks, long term benefits include promoting healthy posture throughout the body, improving general circulation, and improving balance.

Recent research shows that walking for at least an hour or two can cut a man’s stroke risk by as much as one-third, and it doesn’t seem to matter how brisk the pace is.

According to a two-year long study, walking two miles a day or more can reduce your chances of hospitalization from a severe episode of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
